Special Guest
Dr. Daniel Buggs
Daniel “Danny” Buggs is a former professional football player, motivational speaker, and community leader whose life journey reflects outstanding athletic talent and a deep commitment to service. Buggs grew up in Georgia and was a standout athlete at Avondale High School in Avondale Estates, where he excelled in both football and track, earning all-state honors and becoming known for his exceptional speed and athleticism. After high school, he attended West Virginia University, where he continued to showcase his talents on the football field and the track. At West Virginia, he became one of the most explosive wide receivers in program history, earning Kodak First-Team All-America honors in 1973 and recording one of the longest receptions in school history with a 96-yard touchdown against Penn State. He also made an immediate impact on the field, scoring 84 points in the 1972 season and achieving impressive average yardage and scoring statistics that placed him among the school’s all-time leaders. During his collegiate career, he also lettered in track, where his speed continued to set him apart.
Following his success at West Virginia, Buggs was selected in the third round of the 1975 NFL Draft by the New York Giants and went on to play professionally for ten seasons across multiple leagues. In the National Football League, he played for the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, compiling over 110 receptions, 1,500 receiving yards, and multiple touchdowns. He later extended his career in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos, helping the team win the 1980 Grey Cup, and finished his professional playing days in the United States Football League with the Tampa Bay Bandits and San Antonio Gunslingers.
After retiring from professional football, Buggs devoted himself to ministry, leadership development, and community service. He became one of the most sought-after motivational speakers at colleges, universities, coaches’ camps, and churches, using his platform to encourage personal growth, discipline, and faith. His leadership skills and passion for ministry led him to serve as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Chaplain at the University of Tennessee from 1996 to 2001 and later at West Virginia University from 2002 to 2006. In 2006 he was named National Director of Inner-City Ministry for the FCA, where he expanded outreach efforts to support urban youth and communities. Beyond his speaking engagements, Buggs is the founder and executive director of The Winning Circle, a nonprofit organization he established at Fairington Elementary School in Georgia. What began as leadership and character development training for young students grew into programs in the Atlanta Public School System and multiple colleges and universities nationwide. For more than four decades, The Winning Circle has worked to use football principles of discipline and leadership to educate, encourage, and inspire youth to discover and live out their full purpose in life while teaching them to be responsible leaders in their communities.
In recent years, Buggs’s lifelong contributions to athletics and leadership have been further recognized through his induction into the Georgia Highschool Football Hall of Fame, honoring both his high school and professional achievements. He has also been involved in developing the Black Football League (BFL), a post-college league designed to create opportunities for players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities after graduation. Through his continuing work in ministry, nonprofit leadership, and sports development, Danny Buggs has built a legacy that extends far beyond his accomplishments on the football field, demonstrating sustained dedication to empowering others.
